Oldham Athletic are preparing for an exciting summer transfer window as they look to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion from League Two. According to the club’s chief executive, Darren Royle, there is a budget available for transfers this season, but it will be up to manager Micky Mellon to decide how and where that money is spent.

Royle explained, 'We've got a budget so it's how you use that budget. We might use some of that for bids on players, but ultimately that's down to the manager and how he wants to spend that money.' This flexibility allows Mellon to make strategic decisions based on his vision for the team.

Squad Building and Recruitment

The club is targeting up to nine new signings this summer, with three already secured. Royle highlighted the importance of thorough planning in their recruitment process: 'Recruitment is well planned ahead. The manager's been supported with further staff in the shape of Greg Strong (Oldham’s new head of recruitment) and clarity on budget.'

With a third of their squad already in place, Oldham are focused on identifying and securing additional players who can contribute to their promotion push. Royle added, 'Some of the recruitment will no doubt be players that haven't been identified that become available in the window that we didn’t know about. But we're a lot more prepared this season (than last) due to time.'

Competition for Key Targets

While Oldham is eager to strengthen their squad, they face competition from other clubs for key targets. Young Nottingham Forest forward Joe Gardner is understood to be one of the club’s targets, but he is also being pursued by several other teams.

Despite this competition, Royle remains confident in the club's ability to secure their desired signings: 'We're a lot more prepared this season (than last) due to time. We've got a budget so it's how you use that budget.' Oldham’s thorough planning and strategic approach are expected to give them an edge over their rivals.
