Oldham Athletic have made a strong start to the summer transfer window, signing three players to boost their chances of promotion. Gus Scott-Morriss, Elliott Nevitt, and Oliver Norburn have joined the club. The signings give hope that Micky Mellon can build on the strong run they made in the second half of last season. The first of these saw Southend United’s Gus Scott-Morriss arrive as an attacking option from right-back, who proved to be devastating in the National League, grabbing 15 goals from wing-back last season and another four assists. He will be joined in looking to create more goals for The Latics by Elliott Nevitt, who joins from Gillingham, hoping to rediscover the form that saw him net 18 goals for Crewe Alexandra in 2023/24, even if he did not quite live up to that with The Gills, or Cambridge United, where he went on loan in the second half of last season. Their third addition has been Oliver Norburn from Notts County, who was a regular tempo setter for the playoff winners and offers plenty of experience. Barnet were another promoted side that came on strong in the back half of the season, and have also completed a pair of deals, confirming the additions of Craig Farquhar and Zac Williams. Williams adds defensive know-how, with over 100 appearances at just 22, having come through at Crewe, as well as spending time on loan at Kilmarnock, whilst Farquhar joins from the Crystal Palace academy, having shone at Ballymena and Larne in Northern Ireland. Gillingham are another team to have brought in two players, with former Swindon man James Brophy joining as a new option out wide, whilst Zane Alburus joins as a midfielder from the Brighton academy. Arguably the best addition has been National League champions York City, bringing in Mark Shelton from Barnet, having scored 20 goals from midfield over the last two seasons.
