Oldham Athletic's 100% start to the season ended with a 2-1 home defeat to Chesterfield at Boundary Park. Favour Fawunmi's first goal for the club was cancelled out almost immediately by Dilan Markanday's winner.
Lee Bonis put the visitors ahead from close range in the 18th minute. Oldham had a chance to level before half-time when a Louie Marsh shot struck the hand of Gus Scott-Morriss, leading to a penalty. Mat Hudson saved Bonis's initial spot-kick, but the striker reacted fastest to score from the rebound.
The Latics found an equaliser five minutes after the restart. Jamie Robson provided the assist for Fawunmi to fire home his maiden goal for the club. The joy was short-lived, as Chesterfield retook the lead just two minutes later. Josh Koroma set up Dilan Markanday, who finished to make it 2-1.
A club spokesperson said the team showed good character to get back into it, but switched off at a critical moment. They added it was a disappointing result after a strong start at home.
The loss sees Oldham drop to 14th place in the League Two table. They have taken seven points from their opening six matches, with a record of two wins, one draw and three defeats. Their recent form reads LLDWL, having lost their last two games.
Attention now turns to the next fixture. The team will look to bounce back on the road as they continue their campaign. The full schedule of upcoming games is available on our fixtures page.
