Former Oldham Athletic loanee Michael Mellon has completed a move to League One side Stevenage from Burnley. The 22-year-old striker, who scored 10 goals in 18 games for the Latics last season, joins the Hertfordshire club for an undisclosed fee. Oldham currently sit 4th in League Two with 3 points from their opening game, a win.
What happened to Michael Mellon?
Mellon, who played under his father Michael at Boundary Park, spent six years with Burnley before leaving for Stevenage. The young forward made a name for himself during loan spells at Morecambe, Dundee, Bradford City and Oldham. His impressive form at Boundary Park, where he netted two hat-tricks, attracted interest from several clubs, including Plymouth Argyle.
Why did Mellon leave Burnley?
Despite Oldham boss Michael Mellon's desire to keep his son at the club, Burnley were looking for a fee that didn't fit within the Latics' budget. The Championship club accepted Stevenage's offer, allowing Mellon to sign a three-year deal with the League One side. Oldham have made a strong start to the new season, sitting 4th in League Two with a +2 goal difference.
